Copper Oranges knows my weakness... a survey, always.
4 Things I Did Today:
Oh God! It's only 11:30!
* Talked to my friend who's in South Africa right now
* Had a Luna bar, which tasted like fish food.
* Was fifteen minutes late to work, after staying up with Ernest Hemingway
* Enjoyed my first Pall Mall of the day. I'm trashy.
4 Things On My To Do List:
* Dumb goddamn paper.
* WOODY PINES @ Bread & Bagel!
* Buy a mustache for my lumberjack costume
* meet a nice boy who will make me happy.
4 Guilty Pleasures:
* Paris Hilton's My New BFF (SO EFFING WHAT?)
* Spinach dip
* $10 Gap tights... that's a lot for me.
* Driving places that are walking distance when it's cold.
4 Random Facts About Me:
* I have this horrible, huge, weird weakness for dudes in glasses. Seriously. On a scale of 1 to 10, glasses generally add about 3 points. I'm also very shallow.
* I've read my favorite book ever, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, twelve times. And I still enjoy it. And will read it more.
* I have a tattoo but I often forget. And if--make that WHEN (KNOCK WOOD)--Obama wins, I'm getting another one!
* I sometimes wish I had chiseled cheekbones and a scene haircut.

all the rage in helsinki

What are these bags and why don't I have one?
And in other Finnish fashion quandary news, why won't Hel-Looks update?
And, I was going to see my fashion icon Zooey Deschanel tonight perform in Nashville, but the show was way freaking sold out and I'm kind of bummed. At least this way I don't miss Project Runway.

snark. or, I have the best job in the world.
WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING? Black Swan Green by David Mitchell.
Interestingly enough, I got it for free by swindling a "book exchange" company online... I probably shouldn't say that out loud, huh?
WHAT TIME IS IT NOW? Work time.
FAVOURITE BOARD GAME? UpWords. It's like Scrabble but you can ruin people's lives more easily by putting letters on top of others.
FAVOURITE MAGAZINE? Nylon or Elle. I just can't get into Vogue. Anymore, it's mostly articles like, "here's how to avoid facial sagging when you get Botox right before a lunch date!" God forbid that ever be applicable to me.
FAVOURITE SMELL? That's really complicated! Freshly picked lilacs.
WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD? Honestly? The feeling you get when you drink absinthe. Or panic. They're quite similar.
FIRST THING YOU THINK OF IN THE MORNING? How many more times can I hit snooze?
FUTURE CHILD'S NAME? I toss around ideas all the time. Tuesday or Annika for a girl, Lyal or Ira for a boy.
FAVOURITE COLOUR? Bright ass yellow!
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN YOUR LIFE? Strong connections with other people.
FAVOURITE FOOD! Oh goodness. I have to make it down to Nashville for a good Poblano Pesto burrito from Qdoba. On my current budget, it's good I enjoy Ramen Spaghetti with string cheese and a bit of pepper.
IF YOU COULD PLAY AN INSTRUMENT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The autoharp, just like June Carter Cash!
DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE FAST? Yes.
SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL? No, just a lot of pillows.
WHAT TYPE WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? Ford Focus. Ralph. Still got it.
FAVOURITE ALCOHOLIC DRINK? Woodchuck Pear Cider, haha!
WHAT'S IN THE TRUNK OF YOUR CAR? A blanket, a Broadcasting textbook, more junk.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY JOB YOU WANTED WHAT WOULD IT BE? Book editor. Or getting paid to blog.
FAVOURITE MOVIE? Harold and Maude. And Annie Hall. The late 70s were a great time for movies, both on a critical level and a fashion level.
WHAT'S UNDER YOUR BED? I currently sleep on an air bed, so there's just hardwood floor.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST AMBITION? To create something that moves people.
IF YOU COULD BUILD A HOUSE ANYWHERE WHERE WOULD IT BE? I'd like to live in an awesome, historic, already-built house, somewhere that's easily walkable.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING? My momshorts or my romper, which I will probably have photos of soon!
BEACH, MOUNTAINS OR CITY? City. Or beach.
FAVOURITE PHYSICAL FEATURE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX? Luscious lips, good hands and eyes.
THE LAST CD YOU BOUGHT? Oh gosh. I've been on a search for the Yeh-Yeh Girl from Paris by Francoise Hardy.
WHAT TIME DO YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING? My alarm goes off at 9:30. I haul ass out of bed by 10:15. Weekdays, that is.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE KITCHEN ITEM? Tea kettle.
WHICH DO YOU PREFER, SPORTS CAR OR SUV? Smart Car!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SEASON? Spring. Specifically, mid to late April. Summer is good as well, especially July.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPER POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Teleportation. Well me too!
DO YOU HAVE A TATTOO, WHAT IS IT? A heart on the side of my lower back. Not a tramp stamp.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DAY? Thursday nights.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOAP? Dr. Bronner's Lavender 18-in-1
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL? Free Wendy's from my boss.

on beat happening and summer street style.
In order to summarize something, sometimes my vision becomes a montage of images that I try my hardest to transfer to paper. Or, e-paper.
The images that came to mind when I was trying to whittle my summer down into a concise paragraph: first, my new house. As always, click the images to make them bigger.

What it symbolizes to me is my newfound freedom, and what that freedom is represented by in my head is a collage of summer plans and fun people and the great job I have which enables me to write while at work.
The second image is the poster of Stanley Kubrick's Lolita, which I watched for the first time this summer and which, I would argue, has become iconic for fashion today.

The last is the series of photographs of the Glastonbury festival I mentioned in my last post.

This one seems to mix well with the other ideas, with its sense of pragmatism and simple coolness.
This series of images further reminded me of a song: "Bewitched," by Beat Happening, whose lyrics conjured up the image of the kind of girl who I aspire to be and/or dress like and who doesn't take any shit style-wise or otherwise.
I see you hang in the crowd staring me down
Lick that ice cream cone still I'm all alone
You've got me caught let go my heart
Or give me a sign that you'll be mine
I've got a crush on you.
Can't you just imagine the girl the song was written about? Check out SeeqPod if you've never heard it.
But altogether, what am I getting at? Well, in short, it inspired me to blog again, and it sets the mood for the story I'm trying to tell. Why do I get dressed in the morning? In part, to express myself, and part of that is pretending. Don't you agree?

from the pall mall ashes rises a brave new blog.
I used to write a fashion blog. And for some reason I couldn't push myself to do it any longer.
There were a lot of reasons, personal and otherwise, but I want to start again. The caveat: I want to do it completely differently.
There was a lot I didn't like about the way my blog worked. For instance: my interest has never lain in high fashion, which is okay. The last time I was on style.com, I went straight for the Glastonbury photos. I prefer to see what real people wear, and to think about why they wear it. Furthermore, I don't really do much shopping, since I've just moved out of my parent's house and my finances go more to keeping myself alive.
I'd prefer to focus on thoughtful fashion. May I never chronicle another Forever 21 shopping spree, or respond to someone else's post with "well that sure is cute" in order to get more comments on my own blog. May I never feign interest in couture just because that's what everyone else is doing and I want to seem like I know as much as they do.
This blog is intended to represent who I really am, and celebrate other people as they really are. It may be a tall order, but if you're willing to take the leap, then jump on board!
